REDEVELOPMENT
Revitalizing a Carmel shopping center
When the O’Malia Food Market closed in 2017, Carmel, IN., was left without a grocery store in the eastern portion of the city. Grocers were wary of moving into the building, because it needed extensive rehabilitation. In 2019, KennMar acquired the property, and began working with Carmel officials and a regional grocer to fill the vacant space and revitalize the shopping center.
This 70,000-square-foot property includes a former bank building that was converted into a restaurant space. The parking lot that serves retailers in the shopping center has also accommodated overflow parking from an adjacent church, and KennMar and its development partners opted to allow the church and community to continue using the parking lot.
The anchor tenant for this redevelopment – a boutique grocer – is set to open in 2020, and by June 2020, most of the other storefronts had been claimed by other retailers.
